Naarm / Melbourne, Australia (1969–2021).
Damiano Bertoli was one of the most visionary and intellectually rigorous artists of his generation. His practice masterfully wove together disparate historical moments, employing recognizable motifs to construct what he termed the Continuous Moment—a concept that redefined the relationship between past and present in contemporary art. Deeply engaged with the artistic and theoretical legacies of modernism, Bertoli’s work critically examined the ongoing influence of avant-garde experimentation. His fascination with Picasso’s 1941 surrealist play Le Désir attrapé par la queue led to his groundbreaking Continuous Moment: Le Désir series, a bold reimagining and restaging of the play. Through his work, Bertoli interrogated the narrative of time itself, positioning both his own practice and that of other artists within a dynamic, ever-evolving continuum that reshaped our understanding of artistic history.
